The workshop will be led by
Philip Cave, director of the early music ensemble
Magnificat, with
faculty members Sally
Dunkley, Jacqueline Horner, Gabriel Crouch
and Nancy Long. Participants will join in
coaching sessions, workshops and demonstrations of rehearsal
techniques, as well as more informal interactions with
workshop faculty.
This year we
will offer a two-tiered workshop with several options. The
workshop proper will begin on July 24 and finish on July 29:
two additional days, July 22 and 23, will be available as
an optional pre-workshop session for those who would like to
spend additional time studying the music that will be sung
during the workshop. Other activities, including vocal
coaching, may also be available during these days for those
who wish to attend for a full week.
During the
main workshop singers with more advanced
sight-reading experience, or who are comfortable with less
group rehearsal, may opt for the Motet Ensemble whose
singers will work on several of Lassus’ motets and will move
through the music at a faster pace. The second registration
option is the Mass Ensemble: this group will concentrate on
singing several Lassus Masses which will be rehearsed in
greater depth and with more rehearsal time. Both groups will
participate in joint workshop sessions and participate in
some of Lassus’ large-scale, polychoral works. Individual
vocal coaching will also be available during the workshop.
CONDUCTORS
WELCOME! New this year, we are offering sessions for those
interested in conducting early music. These sessions will
include discussions on early music conducting techniques,
music editing, and how to choose a good edition. Coaching
will be available from the faculty members and opportunities
to conduct will be provided.
The workshop
will take place on the campus of Episcopal High School,
Alexandria, Virginia - approximately twenty minutes from
downtown Washington, DC. Housing is available on campus in
modern single and double dorm rooms. Meals will be available
and participants will have access to the school's
facilities, including pool, tennis courts, internet, and
first-class rehearsal and performing space.
