The workshop will be led by Philip Cave, director of the early music ensemble Magnificat, with faculty members Sally Dunkley, Jacqueline Horner, Gabriel Crouch and Steven Rickards. Participants will join in coaching sessions, workshops and demonstrations of rehearsal techniques, as well as more informal interactions with workshop faculty.
2006 is the 350th anniversary of the death of Thomas Tomkins, one of the last of the great Tudor composers. We pay homage by taking the name of the publication of his collected works (Musica Deo Sacra) as the theme for this workshop. We will study and sing sacred and secular music of the renaissance and early baroque period, featuring music by Tomkins himself, and by Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Weelkes and their contemporaries.
Musica Deo Sacra is for singers, choir trainers and auditors. The workshop is particularly keen to attract applications from groups of singers, and small ensemble activities are intended to cater to singers of greater and lesser experience.
The workshop is based in Alexandria, Virginia, with performances in Washington, DC. Accommodation and meal plans are available.
There are discounts for full-time music students and for those applying as small groups. Academic credit may be available. Please contact us for further information about these items.
Applications can be made online at this website, or by mail. If you have any difficulties navigating this site, or finding information that you need, please let us know.
